Secret London

Canals were once the motorways of the country. The Grand Union Canal is the longest canal in the United Kingdom, linking London to Birmingham. The Paddington Branch was completed in 1801. It connects Paddington to the main branch of the Grand Union Canal near Hayes.

It is a broad canal and the maximum dimensions for a boat to be able to travel on the waterway are 72 feet long and 14 feet wide. Many English canals are “narrow” canals, hence the name “narrowboat” given to the traditional craft that navigated the waterway system. The term “narrow canal” does not signify the width of the canal but rather the width of the locks on the canal. A narrow canal has locks which will allow a single narrowboat (6′ 10″) to pass through. Broad canals have wider locks which will allow wide beam boats and pairs of narrowboats to pass through.

They say that the Paddington Arm is one of London’s best kept secrets, providing a green corridor frequented by both people and wildlife.

The bridge in the background is the Harrow Road bridge.
