Azalea Bed, Sandling Park

For one day in the year only, Sandling Park Gardens open their Grade II Heritage Gardens for Pilgrims Hospices. The 25 acre woodland garden abounds with rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias (over 200 different ones), primulas and wild flowers. The azalea collection is considered to be one of the finest in the country. The park is set mainly in woodland which was part of the medieval forest of Westenhanger. It is a collection built up by the Hardy family for over a hundred years. At Sandling, sheltered in a shallow valley deep with peat, they find the perfect environment and are grown to perfection.

Unfortunately, unlike some parts of the country, April 2015 has been somewhat overcast and cold so that many of the rhododendrons are not in bloom, nevertheless there is enough in flower to make an impressive display.
