Sandling Park

Sandling Park was developed on the site of the ancient wood of Westenhanger and was probably originally fenced for deer.

Planting of the woodland garden with rhododendron was begun in 1845. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I never saw this park as it was before 1987 when 70-80% of all the major trees were destroyed or damaged. Included in this was the great alder Alnus glutinosa which had been recorded as the largest in Europe.

The woodland walks and the rhododendron collection have been continuously developed and replanted from about 1919 until the present day.
