St Peter and St Paul_'s, Bilsington
The village of Bilsington has at its heart is the 13th Century parish church of St Peter and St Paul. The church is accessed via a farmers’ yard. The church has a 12th century nave and chancel, with a 16th century tower. The church stands on a promontory with excellent views of Romney Marsh. The church was cared for by the ordained monks of the nearby Saint Augustine’s Priory until the Reformation in 1535. The church provided shelter for pilgrims landing at Romney Marsh and Rye on their way to Canterbury. Outside the church hangs an old bell, taken down from the tower when the bell frame became too weak to hold more than one bell. The bell is older than the tower. The bell casting was paid for by Henry Jordan, a fishmonger and citizen of London during the 15th century.
