Glen Lyon

I think the most memorable event of 2017 was my tour around Scotland with my son, who was taking photographs with an antique camera for his final practical project of his Photographic Arts degree course at the University of Westminster. And one day neither of us will ever forget was our long hike carrying lots of heavy equipment to locate the ‘Praying Hands’ rock.

When we eventually found the rock, having gone astray a couple of times, and I had had time to recover my breath [for the last stretch was up the side of a mountain], I took some photos of my own. [My son’s photo won a competition and is now on display in the offices of a firm of international lawyers].

It really was the most delightful spot. Glen Lyon is the longest enclosed glen in Scotland. It stretches for 32 miles (51 km) and forms part of the 48,400 hectare Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area. Glen Lyon was described by Sir Walter Scott as the ‘..longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland...’

After hours of hiking we eventually made our way back to the Bridge of Balgie where I parked the car and where I knew there was a post office and shop. Having exhausted our supplies I was dying for some refreshment. But it had closed ten minutes before we got back…..
