En Islande certaines fermes se fondent littéralement dans le paysage. De constructions anciennes, elles se distinguent par leur toit composé essentiellement d'herbe et de tourbe. Ces toits constituent une isolation parfaite aux bruits extérieurs tel que le vent, omniprésent en Islande.

 

Facilement manipulable, la tourbe est utilisé en isolant pour la construction de ces toits et parfois des murs dans les régions ou le bois fait défaut. En Islande, elle a été beaucoup utilisée au moyen-âge surtout pour la construction de fermes. Des briques de tourbes sont agencées pour former les murs, et un tapis de pelouse est déroulé sur la charpente du toit. De part sa porosité, la tourbe est également un très bon isolant thermique.

 

In Iceland, some farms literally blend into the landscape. Old buildings, they are distinguished by their roof composed mainly of grass and peat. These roofs constitute a perfect insulation to external noises such as the wind, omnipresent in Iceland.

 

Easily manipulated, peat is used in insulation for the construction of these roofs and sometimes walls in areas where wood is lacking. In Iceland, it has been used a lot in the Middle Ages especially for the construction of farms. Peat bricks are arranged to form the walls, and a carpet of lawn is unrolled on the roof structure. Because of its porosity, peat is also a very good thermal insulator.
