The Microfluidics and Microengineering Group conducted research in a number of the core technologies incorporated into the Portable Integrated Battlespace Biological Detection Technology (PIBBDT) system which has now been delivered to Dstl, Porton Down
Portable Integrated Battlespace Biological Detection Technology : as part of PIBBDT we have developed PDMS-PMMA microfluidic devices (patterning heads) for deposition of up to 16 different concurrent antibodies within a single detection flow cell
Microfluidic blood cell analysis : we have developed a microfluidics-based cytometric instrument for the quantification of erythrocyte (red blood cell) rheology
Suspension compatible micro throttle pumps : we have developed piezoelectrically actuated PDMS-glass and PDMS-PMMA valves and pumps which minimize the problems of blockage and sticking often encountered with microvalves when applied in real-world applicat
Coded microparticles : at the University of Hertfordshire we have developed coded microparticles with both linear (1D) and array (2D) coding
Sustainable Energy Technologies : Novel Concept of a Modular Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) stack. Low temperature PEMFC’s offer a realistic and sustainable alternative to current pri movers that depend on fossil fuels
Microfluidics and microengineering : Synthetic biology provides a complementary perspective from which to consider and utilise the behaviour of molecules and their activity inside living cells. We are investigating enhanced bioreactors.
