S3638 - Auchineden Hill

HISTORY

The pillar was completed 14th February 1946 costing £14.4s.2d. This station was first used for the reconnaissance of secondary block NS77 (Glasgow) during 1947. It was formally computed for triangulation as secondary station NS29/34 within the Greenock block, and levelled to second class precision during 1952. This pillar station was last maintained by the OS in July 1982.

 

SITE VISIT

Approached from the east. Public car park off west side of A809 at NS501808. Mapped paths all the way to summit. Pillar in fair condition, minor cracks in trunk and surface weathering on top. Spider centre open, vertical pipe blocked with debris. Flush bracket faces SSW, ~201°. Vented through NE sight hole. Spectacular 360° panoramic view.
