HISTORY

Pillar completed 1st May 1958 costing £67.1s.2d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NG24/52 within the Skye secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1958. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in April 1978.

 

SITE VISIT

Overall approach from the west. Parked in a wide track entrance at NG389349. Followed the mapped estate track to Bealach Mòr ~NG411356. Took a beeline route SE across rough ground followed by a steep climb to the summit. Open grazing hill. The pillar is in good condition. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. The flush bracket faces west, compass measurement 268°. All four sight holes are open, the pillar bolt is visible. The spectacular 360° panoramic view includes the Cuillin Ridge, Rum, Canna, South Uist, MacLeod's Tables, North Uist, Harris, Storr, Dun Caan, Glamaig, Blabheinn.
