The building, which already existed during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu (1688 - 1714), was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1802. The sovereign Constantin Ipsilanti (1802 - 1806) donated it as well as the Friday church (under renovation in 2021) at the badly damaged Dealu monastery.
At the beginning of the 20th century the building was used as a local private boarding school for the city police and during World War I it housed the seat of the German command. It also served as a copper house and since the last renovation in 2007/2010 it houses the Museum of Printing and the of the old Romanian Books.
