SARBI: Biserica de lemn Sf. Nicolae - Josani (1685)

The wooden church of Josani in the village of Sârbi, Maramureş, was built of oak wood around 1685. This is the foundation of the noble family Dunca de Serbi, who mastered this lower part of the village in that era and was the unbroken patron of the church until the end of the 18th century. This means that the Dunca de Serbi family cared for and endowed the church and maintained a priest in it for more than a hundred years.

The nave is covered with a semicylindrical vault. Above the rampart narthex rises the bell tower. The roof has a double eaves. The church houses some very valuable wood icons, two of them painted around 1775, can be attributed to Radu Munteanu (one representing the Mother of God with the baby and the other one a Deisis). The royal doors, beautifully sculpted, can be attributed to the iconic craftsmen from the Plohod family, in Dragomiresti, Maramures.

Nb: At the top of the village, there is a second wooden church, the wooden church of Saint Paraschiva in Susani, built of oak wood around 1639.
