Rogoz: Biserica Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril

Wooden church of Rogoz, “Holy Archangels Michael & Gabriel”, built in 1663.

Historical Monument recorded as World Heritage Site, code 904

The church is located in Lapus Land, on the Lapus Valley and was built in 1663 by the village community, on the site of an older church burnt by Tartar invaders. In 1785 it was painted by the painter Radu Muntreanu and Nicolae Man. In 1834 a tribune was built on the west of the naos (inner chamber or nave), whose railing was painted in the same year, where the roof of the pronaos and the vault of the nave were being repainted, and were the windows also modified.

The church has a more rare type of pronaos (entrance / outter part) having a polygon plane, with access to the south, a rectangular nave and a retractable, polygonal 7-sided apse. Interior-wise, the master beams, main beams of the vault’s arches and the brackets are decorated with the motif of the rope.

The exterior of the church is richly decorated: the southern facade, in the medial zone, is decorated with the profiled motif of the rope; the entrance door in the church has an arch opening, and frames decorated with a simple double layer of rope and rosettes, on the left side there is a cross decorated with the same elements. The eaves are supported on consoles which end with a horse-head, and the beams under the eaves have creased edges. The roof is asymmetrical to protect the “table of elders’ along the northern facade. On top of the pronaos, rises the square bell tower, with the open bell tower chamber, within the console, formed by the assembly of poles and arches, and the pyramid high roof has corner turrets. The building’s Paintings contribute essentially to the special value of this monument. Being related to the iconography and style of Radu Munteanu’s work in Desesti-Maramures, the painting impresses with the decorativism of the ensemble, drawing with thick, even lines and bright chromaticity.

The church is located in the village cemetery, near to another wooden ‘church, brought here from Baita de Sus, (Maramures)
