Rozavlea: Biserica ortodoxa "Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil" (1717)

The Rozavlea wooden church "Archangels Michael and Gabriel" dates back to 1717

Rozavlea commune is one of the old settlements in the historical Maramures, inhabited by the "free Dacians" and their Romanian descendants from ancient times. At the time of voivodates, Rozavlea was part of the Bogdanesti valley cave, being mentioned among the villages of Luga, Bogdan's brother. After 1424, the settlement became the center of the domains of Luga's successors.

The church dates back to 1717 and was traditionally brought from another locality in Maramureş and raised on the site of the old wooden church destroyed by the Tartars. Also by tradition, Rozavlea was a voivodal domain, and it had a monastery, until today there are places called "the monastery's plains" and "the monk's hill" at the bottom of the village. The church is made of fir wood, by anonymous craftsmen, in a specific style of Maramureş. The painting was executed on wood, except for the painting of the altar, which is entirely made of cloth. The painting on wood was started by Ioan Plohod from Dragomireşti and his son in 1810 and finished in 1826. The last restorations of the church structure were made in 1981 and 2008. The restoration of the painting was started in 2010 and still works.
