Sighetu-Marmatiei: Biserica ucraineană

The Ukrainian church in Sighetu Marmatiei was built between 1791-1807 by Greek Catholics, on the site of an old wooden church. In 1948, when the Greek-Catholic religion was forbidden, the church became one of Ukrainian Orthodox rite. The church has a bulbous bell tower and old Slavonic bells. The interior has a single ship with a semicircular altar. The original painting was made by the local painter Kádár Géza, a representative of the painting school, which disappeared during the renovations from 1990 to 1997. The actual painting was made by the artist Constantin Marocovici from Lvov. During the 7 years of renovation, the old iconostasis was replaced and the stained glasses disappeared and only one remained.
