Axente Sever: Biserica evanghelică fortificata

Axente Sever, 2100 inhabitants, is a village located in the northern part of the Sibiu county, in the Tarnavelor Plateau.

The fortified church of Frâua (former saxon name) is mentioned for the first time in 1322. The place of the All Saints is a quaint church with a pentagonal choir. It is one of the few churches in Transylvania that have the bell tower above the choir (similar examples being found in Agârbiciu, Ocna Sibiului and Turnişor).

With the rise of Turkish invasions in the late fifteenth century, the fortification of the church began. The enclosure, built at the same time as the fortification works of the church, has an oval trail, curtains, 6-8 m high, with ramparts and countertops. On the inside, the walls look smaller, due to the high court level.
