Surdesti: Biserica de Lemn, UNESCO

The Greco-Catholic wooden church of the Holy Archangels in Surdesti is located at the border between the “country” of Lapus and the historical region of Maramures and was built in 1721 by craftsman Ion Macarie. In 1783, three painters, including Stefan Zugravu from Sisesti (iconostasis and altar), shared the task of decorating the inside of the church. The two-level portico and its tall bell tower date back to the 19th century. The framing “windows” of the door between the narthex and the naos were added in 1932.

The church's is rectangular, with a two-level portico to the west and an altar with a recessed polygonal apse. The outer walls are richly decorated. The facades and the frame of the entrance door were embellished with twisted-rope motifs. At both levels of the portico there are double, scalloped arches. The accolade-shaped windows are placed on two levels and the roof has double eaves. Above the narthex rises the bell tower which harbours a bell room with an open gallery and arcades resting on pillars, all covered by a high-pitched pyramidal roof with corner pinnacles.

Reflecting influences from Baroque styling, the mural painting is characterized by drama and dynamism in the representation of the characters. The iconostasis, organized in a pyramidal structure, its icons featuring golden backgrounds and richly sculpted frames are obviously influenced by Baroque styling, and together make the church's interior quite fastidious.

Acknowledged as the tallest historical monument wooden church in the country, due to its 54-meter-high bell tower, the church of the Holy Archangels in Surdesti combines all the features of wooden churches from Maramures at the height of their development especially in terms of style and decorations. The church is also the tallest wooden church in the world rising 72 meters from the ground and featuring a tower 54 meters high.

NB: At the top of the village, in a cemetery there is a small old wooden church brought in the 1930s from a neighboring village.
