Inaugurada em Novembro de 2004, e situada no bairro do Butantã, em São Paulo, a Galeria Leme se posiciona em meio de uma paisagem que rapidamente se modifica segundo as forças da construção civil e da expansão urbana.
O projeto da galeria, comissionado ao arquiteto brasileiro Paulo Mendes da Rocha, é uma verdadeira afirmação arquitetônica. Tanto na sua relação com o entorno, que denota uma postura assertiva porém defensiva e introspectiva. Como nos seus espaços interiores, abdicando do genérico “cubo-branco” em favor de uma rica espacialidade e materialidade. A sua construção, feita totalmente em concreto aparente, in situ, lhe dá o aspecto de um bunker firmemente enraizado neste local em constante mutação.
Logo após a construção do edifício, a área ao seu entorno começou a ser reconhecida por seu crescente potencial de desenvolvimento, e esta reapreciação aumentou o valor dos bens imobiliários e o interesse construtivo sobre aquela zona. Em 2010, todo o quarteirão onde o edifício se encontrava foi comprado, por uma das principais companhias multinacionais Brasileiras, para ai ser construído o edifício de sua nova sede. Consequentemente, a galeria teve de ser destruída e realocada, mas, tratando-se de um edifício de autor, este processo não prosseguiu sem antes ser instituído um acordo que salvaguardasse a continuidade da existência do projeto. Este estabelecia que a nova galeria seria reconstruída, a aproximadamente 300 metros da sua localização original, usando o projeto inicial como base. A nova galeria Leme, mais do que uma releitura da edificação anterior, se aproxima extremamente da ideia de clone.
Para além de ter sido deslocada e replicada, a galeria foi também ampliada, tendo sido acrescentado um novo edifício ao projeto inicial, resultado da colaboração entre Paulo Mendes da Rocha e o escritório paulistano Metro Arquitetos Associados.
A nova galeria, inaugurada em 2012, é composta por dois blocos de concreto aparente que acomodam, entre si, um espaço externo. Ambos edifícios são unidos, no primeiro andar, por uma passarela que atravessa este pátio central. Este espaço vazio humaniza a escala do edifício e torna a sua relação com o entorno mais generosa e complexa.
A história deste edifício pode ser tomada como uma representação, numa escala menor, dos processos evolutivos da cidade de São Paulo e de tantas outras metrópoles contemporâneas. Assentes num incessante ciclo de construção, demolição, deslocamento e reconstrução.

Opened in November 2004 and located in the district of Butantã in São Paulo, Brazil, Galeria Leme stands in the midst of a landscape that quickly changes under the pressures of construction and of the urban sprawl.
The gallery’s project, commissioned to the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, is an architectural statement. Not only in its relationship with its surroundings, which denotes an assertive but simultaneously defensive and introspective posture. But also in its internal spaces, renouncing the generic “white cube” in favour of a rich spatiality and materiality. Its construction, made entirely of exposed in situ concrete, gives it the appearance of a bunker that is firmly grounded in its ever-changing setting.
Soon after the building’s construction, the area surrounding it began to be recognized for its growing development potential, and this reassessment increased the value of the real estate as well as the constructive interest over that area. In 2010, a leading Brazilian multinational company purchased the entire block where the building stood in order to build its new headquarters. Consequently, the gallery had to be destroyed and relocated, but because it is a building from a distinguished architect, this process did not proceed without first being established an agreement that would safeguard the continued existence of the project. It stipulated that the new gallery would be rebuilt, with the exact same project, approximately 300 meters from its original location. The new Galeria Leme, more than being a rereading of the previous construction, is extremely close to the idea of a clone.
Besides being moved and replicated, the gallery was also expanded. A new building was added to the initial project, resulting from the collaboration between Paulo Mendes da Rocha and the São Paulo office Metro Architects.
The new gallery, opened in 2012, is composed by two exposed concrete structures that accommodate an external space in between them. Both buildings are united, on the first floor level, by a walkway that runs through this central courtyard. This void humanizes the scale of the construction and makes its relationship with the surroundings more generous and complex.
The history of this building can be taken as a representation, on a smaller scale, of the evolutionary processes of São Paulo, and of many other contemporary metropolises, which are based on an incessant cycle of construction, demolition, displacement and reconstruction.
