Baird's Sandpiper BASA (Calidris bairdii)

of the flock of 7

Encountering these birds was a big surprise for me - given the location.

AS per guide book notes regarding this species' preference to forage drier habitats than most other shorebirds.

This was one of my favorite discoveries of 2017,and a new aspect observation & learning point for this species.

this was my 1st 'flock' of Baird's (7)

from what i gather it is a notable sighting for Victoria area ,in a few regards

yes,there were only a few prerequisite Killdeer hanging around - otherwise no other shorebirds present...not surprising since there was no water features anywhere near there.

CORNELL::

Breeds in dry coastal and alpine tundra. Migrates and winters along mudflats, estuaries, grassy marshes, and dry grassy areas near lakes and ponds, rarely dry pastures and prairies away from water.

If i remember correctly they remained at least 3 days feeding & resting (obs just before i left on holidays)
