Erechtheion

The Erechtheion is some ways physically represents the naming of the city of Athens. As the story goes, Zeus decided that each that both Poseidon (the god of the sea) and Athena (the goddess of wisdom) would present the city with gifts to win their favor. Poseidon struck his trident in the ground and a spring flowed forth, but the people were not impressed, for the water was salty and tasted like the ample sea. Athena planted the seed of an olive tree, which provided the people with food, oil and wood. The choice was clear and the city was named for the goddess Athena. (But to keep Poseidon from being upset, they dedicated the rear porch of the Erechtheion -- the rest is for Athena. Nici and I jokingly refer to this as Zeus' Water Closet.)
