PRS_060 Manteau du soir, Karl Lagerfeld - Chanel, 1996-1997
Gabrielle Chanel amassed an eclectic collection of items in her flat at 31 rue Cambon, including Chinese screens made from Coromandel lacquer panels that covered the entire wall of her office. Later, Karl Lagerfeld drew inspiration from those screens when designing this coat, using the same motifs and varied range of colours. Very popular with European courts in the 17th and 18th centuries, lacquer screens were imported from China and frequently cut in order to be reused on the fronts of Western-made furniture, such as this chest of drawers.
