PRS_086 Syntopia, Iris van Herpen, 2018-2019
Syntopia dress, silk organza, laser-cut crepe, Mylar, stainless steel.
Iris van Herpen, Amsterdam
Designed as a reference to chronophotography, a technique developed in the last quarter of the 19th century, the 'Syntopia' dress transforms its wearer into a bird whose fluttering wings create an ethereal architecture. The paradoxical combination of volume and lightness is in keeping with the decorative fashions of the Second Empire (1852-1870). Here, in the apartments of the Ministry of State, the impressive gilded bronze and cut crystal chandeliers which hold up to sixty candles seem to float.
