PRS_056 Manteau en coton imprimé, Dries van Noten, 2017

This coat by Dries Van Noten borrows its imagery from a Flemish tapestry, produced in the second half of the 17th century: Moses Saved from the Waters. A true example of mise en abyme, one garment is represented on another garment. By playing with the superposition of the coat's layers, Dries Van Noten aims to make the central image legible, while at the same time reproducing the frontal effect of the tapestry. However, this is by no means a tapestry cut to make a garment: the designer used a textile-printing technique to transfer the image onto the fabric.

Printed cotton coat, cotton trousers.
