PRS_087 Île Enchantée, Karl Lagerfeld - Chanel, 1987-1988

'Enchanted Island' ensemble in red silk satin embroidered by Lesage with an opera curtain pattern.

In the 19th century, red, in combination with gold, became the colour of theatres. This same colour scheme was adopted for the apartments of the Ministry of State, where social and political life was a spectacle in itself. Just as the curtains in these apartments were trimmed with gold passementerie, the edges of the dress are embroidered with frieze motifs in gold thread. At the hips, the basque imitates the movement of a curtain held back in certain places. This trompe-l'oeil treatment is reminiscent of the way false curtains are superimposed over real curtains in the salon-theatre.
