PRS_088 Robe en moire, John Galliano - Christian Dior, 2005

Embroidered moire and voided velvet dress

This look has all the hallmarks of an imperial vision: volume, a crimson colour, and ermine fur trimming the bottom of the dress. John Galliano's collection is influenced by the film Sissi - The Young Empress (Ernst Marischka, 1956) and is perfectly at home in this opulent Second- Empire setting from 1861. Inspired by a long trip to Vienna, Istanbul and Central Europe, Galliano picked up a very 19th-century decorative spirit, to which he blends 'pin-up glamour' with nods to Persian and Ottoman motifs, such as these blue embroidered designs that echo the ceramics produced in Iznik in what is now Turkey from the 15th century onwards.
