PRS_023 Robe Cathedrale, Iris van Herpen, 2012
Iris van Herpen, Amsterdam
Gothic architecture has always been part of Iris van Herpen's aesthetic vocabulary, serving as inspiration for this 'Cathedral' dress with its slender structure of curves and counter-curves, evoking a Flamboyant Gothic style nurtured by imagination. Through this design that adapts an architectural style to a deco- rative art form, Van Herpen creates kinship between her dress and many contemporaneous Gothic pieces. These include monstrances, reliquaries and altarpieces, works placed at the rear of an altar, with a slender structure and sculptural forms.
