Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi)
Santa Rita Lodge, Tucson, AZ
At 7:00 pm, this little owl poked out of the famous nest at Santa Rita (in a power pole) where she and her family have nested for 5 years. The Elf Owl is well known for being the smallest owl in the world, at a mere 6 inches tall at adulthood. We saw two of them at their nest, and I heard a Whiskered Screech Owl.
