Scenic Rim and Tweed Caldera
Springbrook Plateau escarpment and Mt Cougal to the left constitute part of the rim of the Great Tweed Shield Volcano caldera. The remaining tortured landscape is a remnant of the vast volcanic shield which exploded 23 million years ago as pressure built up beneath lava fields layered over the area between the the Tweed Valley and the range just south of Brisbane. The area, basically the Gold Coast hinterland, was named as a Lonely Planet top destination for 2022.
