The Whale Galaxy (NGC4631)
Description
NGC 4631 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. Seen edge-on, it lies only 25 million light-years away and is about the same size as our galaxy - the Milky Way This galaxy's slightly distorted wedge shape gives it the appearance of a herring or a whale. NGC 4631 has a nearby companion -dwarf elliptical galaxy, NGC 4627 which can be seen just above the main galaxy.
