This mighty camel thorn acacia probably fell over 800 years ago.
Until now the massive trunk frames the view of the Deadvlei and its mighty dunes.
When I photographed this view on slide film in 2003, I didn't know that I would be taking this picture again in 2025. The slide had developed such strong color casts over the years that it was no longer usable. It was one of my favorite shots of Namibia, so when I traveled again, I checked to see if it was possible to repeat the same motif digitally.
Nothing had changed. Even small branches that had been there 23 years ago were still there without having changed their position. Perhaps they were just covered with a little more sand.
In this digital image, only one thing is different: in 2025 it rained so much in Nambia that even in Deathvlei a few green tufts of grass are growing.
Vermutlich schon vor 800 Jahren fiel diese mächtige Kameldornakazie um.
Bis heute rahmt der massive Stamm den Blick auf das Deadvlei und seine mächtigen Dünen ein.
Als ich 2003 dieses Blick noch auf Diafilm aufnahm, wusste ich nicht, dass ich diese Aufnahme 2025 wiederholen würde. Das Dia hatte über die Jahre so starke Farbstiche entwickelt, dass es nicht mehr zu gebrauchen war. Es war eines meiner Lieblingsaufnahmen von Namibia und so sah ich bei meiner erneuten Reise nach, ob eine Wiederholung des gleichen Motivs digital möglich war.
Nichts hatte sich verändert. Selbst kleine Äste, die schon vor 23 Jahren dort gelegen hatten, lagen immer noch da, ohne ihre Position verändert zu haben. Vielleicht waren sie nur mit etwas mehr Sand bedeckt.
In diesem digitalen Bild ist nur eines anders: 2025 hat es in Nambia so viel geregnet, dass selbst im Deathvlei ein paar grüne Grasbüschel wachsen.
