Exchange Programme between Myanmar and Indonesia on FLEGT-VPA Activities

Indonesia is supporting Myanmar in the preparation stage for entering negotiation with the European Union (EU) on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade - Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA). As Indonesia will be the first country in the world to attain FLEGT license, it shared the success experience with Myanmar on the development of Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK) or Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), the core of the FLEGT-VPA negotiation between Indonesia and EU.

During the exchange programme from 9–10 August 2016 in Yangon - Myanmar, Indonesian delegation suggested that Myanmar needs to focus on critical factors of FLEGT-VPA that eventually towards the purpose of transparency and inclusiveness. Meanwhile, Myanmar realized that the current TLAS system needs significant improvement, especially on multi-stakeholder engagement. In order to get more inputs on TLAS development, Myanmar delegation will visit Indonesia from 5–10 September 2016, including field trips to several small, medium and large furniture industries and community forest certified by SVLK in Jepara, Boyolali, and Yogyakarta.
