Exchange Programme between Myanmar and Indonesia on FLEGT VPA Activities
Indonesia is supporting Myanmar in the preparation stage for entering negotiation with European Union (EU) on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade - Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA). As Indonesia will be the first country in the world to attain FLEGT license, Indonesia shared its experience with Myanmar on the development of Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK) or Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), the core of the FLEGT-VPA negotiation between Indonesia and EU. During the exchange program from 9-10 August, 2016, in Yangon, Myanmar, the Indonesia delegation suggested that Myanmar needs to focus on critical factors of FLEGT-VPA that eventually for the purpose of transparency and inclusiveness. Meanwhile, Myanmar realized that the current TLAS system needs significant improvement, especially on multi stakeholder engagement. In order to get more inputs on TLAS development, Myanmar delegation will visit Indonesia from 5-10 September, including field trip to several small, medium and large furniture industries and community forestry certified by SVLK in Jepara, Boyolali, Yogyakarta.
