Chapter 1 - Episode 3
Location: Urban Sector - Forgotten Alleyway, World of Ruin
As Shadow wandered across the Urban Sector, he thought about the Civilization that came before, as he most often did. This vast expanse of broken city scape was once a sprawling metropolis, with inhabitants coming and going, going and coming, did it even matter to them? They had achieved such greatness through their technological achievements, Shadow thought to himself. He wished that he could have seen this place, before the Calamity destroyed everything. The Urban Sector is little more than decaying rubble now, with each day a battle for survival.
For as long as Shadow has wandered, he has never ventured beyond the Urban Sector. He has seen the Bridge many times before, hanging ominously above the ocean waters like a mighty skeleton of steel, concrete, and rivets. Even still, not a day goes by that he doesn't come across someplace new. Today was no different.
Shadow looked down a dark alleyway, much of the cobblestone pathway was still intact, lit faintly by the glow of street lamps. At one time, long ago, this alleyway may have been some kind of marketplace, with stalls lining the cobblestone pathway, greeted by eager shoppers passing by. At the far end of the alleyway, Shadow saw the distinct silhouette of an old motor bike. He had seen pictures of them before, in what was left of tattered magazine and newspaper ads. He was amazed that this one had somehow survived the Catastrophe. By now, the motor bike's fuel cells must be drained, and he would need to find replacements. Regardless, Shadow knew that he must claim this incredible find.
Before he took one step further, a sudden clang of metal jarred Shadow's ear drums. He took cover. An Ogre Sharpshooter came into view, with his back turned to Shadow. The Ogre was well armored, and well equipped. This may not be an easy fight, but given the circumstances, it was worth it. Shadow watched the Ogre’s movements for some time, but the beast didn't seem to take notice of him. The Ogre was gathering materials, among the collected scrap were several charged fuel cells. Had the Ogre been repairing the motor bike this whole time, how was this possible, Shadow thought to himself. Had he been wrong about the Ogre race? Had he underestimated their resolve? It is said that the Ogre were a subterranean race, living in underground tunnels and colonies before the Catastrophe. Something had caused their mass exodus to the surface countless seasons ago.
Shadow readied his long rifle, a glaring weak spot in the Ogre’s helmet would be his target. Its right eye was exposed, a single bullet would take the beast down. Given the distance though, it would require perfect aim, steady and true. Shadow lined up his shot, waiting for the right time to strike. He pressed his finger against the trigger, the moment was now.
