Sunshine and Smoke

A field of Arrowleaf balsam root flowers glows in the light of the afternoon sun. In the background, the mountains are hazed in the smoke from the Canadian wildfire that is currently blanketing the nation's northern tier.

This is the first day the Bison Range, located just outside of Ravalli, MT, was fully open for the season. The refuge was established in 1908 by Teddy Roosevelt, and today continues the original mission, to keep a representative herd of bison to help ensure the species' persistence. It's also a just an awesomely beautiful place.
