New York: 500 Fifth Avenue, 1931

Overlooked as skyscrapers go, this was by the team that brought the Empire State Building (Shreve Lamb and Harmon). It remains virtually anonymous, despite its sheer height of 625 feet. The plot of 500 is less than a quarter the size of the Empire State, so the setbacks have less impact. The tower lacks both the distinctive spire of the Empire State and its dramatic contrast between plinth and shaft.
