Wide field view of the region around the star Mirach, showing the lenticular dwarf NGC 404 (the ghost) and the spheroidal dwarf Donatiello I (the goblin).
The first insert is an enlargement of the background photo, while the inset is a color processing of the galaxy taken at the GranTeCan of 10.4m diameter.
Donatiello I is a small neighboring galaxy, just 10 million light-years away (among the 120 closest to the Milky Way), was discovered on 23 September 2016 by Giuseppe Donatiello. Confirmation images were obtained by the team of the italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) and later captured with the spanish Gran Telescopio Canarias, the largest in the world with its 10.4m.
The announcement article was published in 2018 on Astronomy & Astrophysics [A&A 620, A126 (2018)], with first author David Martínez-Delgado.
Donatiello I is thought to form a pair with NGC 404 [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_404], the nearest lenticular dwarf galaxy known as the Mirach's Ghost, from which it would be about 200,000 light-years away.
