Strawberry Moonrise

The "Strawberry Moon" rising behind the radar dome on Mt Laguna in San Diego's Mt Laguna Mountain Range.

The full moon is refereed to as the Strawberry Moon not because of its color or hue but because Native American tribes in the northeastern United States marked the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered.

The radar dome is a remnant of Air Defense Command permanent radar network built in 1952, Mount Laguna Air Force Station was one of twenty-eight stations.

It was closed in 1981 by the Air Force, and turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Today the site is part of the Joint Surveillance System (JSS)

I had a feeling last night would get socked in with clouds again and I wanted to photograph something different with the moon then I usually do so I planned this out and drove 1 hour east of San Diego into our local mountains to this spot and then spent and hour scouting out the location and refining my spot until I was confident it would work and then just waited for the moon to pop up behind the dome. Its always a trill when you see the moon starting to peak up over the edge of the horizon and you realize your plan is going to work out.
