Giving my Breaks a Break
In Iceland, if there's something you should know about road conditions, it's that if the road is open, you should be able to drive through it, no matter what car you're driving, unless noticed otherwise.
Personnaly, I was driving a Nissan Micra, the smallest, cheapest car I could find, and the first time I was driving a manual car since getting my license back in 2000.
I took the Micra anywhere I could. Most roads were open except for the mountain roads going to the middle of the island, so I could go anywhere a 4x4 would also be allowed too.
So I wasn't tense getting onto road 614. That changed.
Road 614, on top on going up and down on a near vertical basis (if I'm exagerating), is made of rocks you could call boulders and pot holes you could call craters.
And you have to drive through one hairpin turn after the other, still without any barrier to protect you from being catapulted into the abyss at the bottom of the valley while doing hundreds of barrel rolls.
So it was a true relief when I could find an area somehow flat to take a break, a shot, and a cigarette, while thinking how soothing it's going to be to walk in smooth sand for a change.
