Day 1 @ Fairview
Amtrak 301, the "Day 1" ALC-42 heritage unit, was assigned to the 381 / 382 turn today to test new shunting technologies that Amtrak is considering to eliminate the need for extra cars on some trains to trigger grade crossings (e.g., along CN's Chicago Sub).
The locomotive's paint scheme was applied to an E8 when Amtrak was newly born in 1971, but it never became an "official" company look. The train itself is passing the Fairview Ave Metra station in Downers Grove, IL, an old CB&Q depot that was originally built in 1917.
