The Next Generation
For the better part of the past 25ish years, Amtrak's P42 locomotive has been the standard of choice for leading Amtrak's long distance trains (names like the Empire Builder, California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, etc) and most regional trains.
That will all be changing soon. Meet the newest locomotive model to the fleet, the ALC-42 (Amtrak Long-distance Charger), built by Siemens. These are numbers 302 and 303, cooling their wheels at a station stop in Naperville on the Chicago-bound California Zephyr, having been built in California and on their way to the Northeast for testing.
Numbers 300 and 301 are already in Amtrak's possession and have been going through testing. Time will tell when all of these locomotives will start entering revenue service.
