Buck Creek Heritage
About 10-15 minutes east of the city of Lafayette, IN is a little hole-in-the-wall hamlet called Buck Creek. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it type of establishment, having little more than a few houses, one or two businesses, a post office, and some kind of venue (maybe a house?) with a couple soda machines outside.
But for railfans, there is also an old grain elevator, which doesn't receive rail service, but does bear witness to Norfolk Southern's Lafayette District, which runs between its namesake town and Peru, IN.
It is here (and the surrounding area to kill time) where I staked out my Saturday night/early Sunday morning to bear witness to intermodal train 21T, which runs between Harrisburg, PA and Kansas City, which on this particular night was led by a rare double-header of two NS heritage units, 8104 "Lehigh Valley" and 1073 "Penn Central".
Though the train usually runs through Buck Creek in late afternoon, locomotive issues and delays in Fort Wayne significantly delayed the train's progress, thus the late night.
