A Date with Miss Katy
A couple days prior to this photo, UP 1988, Union Pacific's M-K-T heritage unit, trailed into Chicago on an eastbound Z, facing west. My hope/expectation was that it would return as the leader of a westbound Z.
The next day proved disappointing, with the westbound Z-trains heading out with no sign of the Katy. Tonight, however, word came down that she was leading the hottest train on the rails, ZG1SC-06, the daily Z for Salt Lake City.
I had envisioned shooting it under the old C&NW coal tower in Nelson, IL, since I have been staying with my family in the Dixon area since mid-March to wait out the coronavirus, and I haven't really seen any night shots of the tower. I initially set up at the Nelson road crossing, but then backtracked to the tower and barely had enough time to set up four flashes before she barreled through.
Here's Miss Katy blasting its way under the tower on her way west, doing every bit of track speed in the process. Until the next date!
