The various studs on the front of the loco represent the various connections for power and control. There are three connections which I presume are a power supply for the coaches and control cables that make the remote control from the opposite end of the train possible. What the third one is for I have not yet found out. The cables would be run up over the loco roof and along the roofs of the coaches with plug and socket connections to each car.
