Clearly I didn't come up with this straight from the drawing board without testing everything first. This is Robotrain v1.0 under test showing how the components can be as tightly packed as possible and still function correctly.

 

In this test the loco has a delayed start following a button press and accelerates up to full speed. It then follows instructions it receives from the coloured tiles in the track; yellow to reduce speed to 50% and red to decelerate to a stand. The pink tile is there to reference where the loco stops each time.

 

This test was the first to alert me to the deficiencies of the motors, as I hadn't appreciated how slow they were. This prototype has a gear ratio of 1:1 and yet it barely attains any great speed. The other issue with the motors is that the output appears not to increase much beyond around 70% power, which is why the train seems not to respond very quickly to the yellow tile and why the speed does not reduce greatly.
