Banking on Worsbrough

We watched a MGR train leave Wath and then got ahead of it on the incline, between Wath and Barnsley Junction, having paused for bankers to come on the on the rear, 76031+037. I'm no longer sure of the gradient (it was steeper than the main lift over Woodhead) and 4 Class 76 locos was the norm for these trains. 76022+023 were at the head and speed was not very high.

In GCR days Robinsom had sketched an 0-10-2 banker for this duty and the Gresley Garratt was later tried. Note how, after electrification in the early '50s, it became an early example of lineside afforestation. 23rd June 1981.
