Back-to-backs twilight
The sun struggles to pierce the smoke-laden atmosphere over two rows of back-to-back terraces* near the collieries at Fryston and Wheldale, Castleford.
* An old form of high-density housing with the homes literally back to back and all the rooms on each side facing outwards. When narrow and deep they could be gloomy and if close to a pit like this pair, often under clouds of smoke too. Once common in the industrial regions, most have been pulled down but quite a few survive. More info at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-to-back_houses
