Clifton House, a Lynn landmark

 

In the eighteenth century Clifton House was the residence of a rich merchant but parts are earlier, for instance the C14th vaulted undercroft.

 

The site runs back from Queen Street to what was originally a quay on the bank of the Ouse, with warehouses and domestic accommodation providing all that a merchant of the time might need!

 

By good fortune, our visit coincided with the opportunity to explore the five-storey watch tower, which dates from the late C16th, and enjoy the sweeping views from its rooftop.

 

The King's Lynn Preservation Trust undertook the restoration of the exterior of Clifton House in 2002-03, and they've more about the property and a summary of that process on...
