Red Racer Vol. 4 #24: The Man Known as Zoom Pt. 2

It’s been about two week since we stopped Meister, and I still don’t know how I feel. I mean, we beat the guy, but at a cost. I've felt horrible about it ever since. I could've stopped him from...no, don't do that to yourself Allen. There was nothing you could've done. Then when I get back, I received the shock of my life. He was there. Barry Allen. The Flash. My father. He’d been visiting Cisco when I arrived. Speaking of, Cis decided to splurge out my secret when we were talking. I’m guessing he was shocked when he found out those two knew Central City’s resident speedster. Bigger shock for me though, since I’m seeing a version of my dad who is over a decade younger than how I remember. This Barry has to be in his late-twenties, much younger than what I'm used to. Everything has been such a whirlwind lately, I don’t know how to focus. Luckily, I’m finally getting some time to stretch my legs. All week has been nothing but muggings and jaywalkers, but now there’s a major robbery at the Fox Art Gallery. I dashed out the second I heard about it.

Once I got there, I saw that the doors were blown apart. I examine them and see not just debris, but gouge marks in the doorway, consistent with a sword, or dagger, or...boomerang.

“Aw, man,” I grumble as I make my way inside. Sure enough, standing there shoving paintings into a duffel bag, was a tall, slightly overweight, Aborigines man with a jacket that has boomerangs hooked to it. Digger Harkness, also known as Captain Boomerang. One of my dad’s original villains. He looks over at me and begins to bark with a slurred, heavy Australian accent.

“‘Ello, love,” he grins, and grabs a boomerang to chuck at me. I sidestep as it hurls towards me, embedding itself in the wall. A second after, it detonates and leaves a smoking chunk of wall missing. I run towards him and punch him in the stomach. He doubles over, grunts, and strikes me with another boomerang. I look at my arm, which is now dripping blood.

“Come on, Captain Kangaroo. I just got this tailored.”

He laughs and slings the bag over his shoulder. When he goes to make his escape, I rush to his side and tackle him down. I hold him down while he smiles.

“Don’t be so smug, Dundee. You’re going to Iron Heights for a while.”

“I wouldn’ worry much about me. I ain’t alone, after all. Oi, Maggie!”

I scream as a sharp object embeds itself in my shoulder. My head swaps around to see a blonde girl about my age, wearing an all black jumpsuit. She holds a small device in her hand, and when she presses it I get a giant surge of electricity through my body, causing me to fall down. Groggily, I try to get up as she helps Harkness up.

“You alright, Unc?” she asked, brushing off his shoulder. He nods and smirks as he looks at my shivering now.

“I’m right as, dear niece. This lass ain’t, though.”

They both look up in surprise as police sirens fill the air. Quickly, they begin to stuff more works of art in their bags. I look around and see something silver near me. I squint to focus on it. A boomerang with rounded edges. It must have fallen off of his coat when I knocked him over. My hand grasps it and I read the label etched onto it: ‘Stun’.

“Perfect,” I say quietly as I watch the two start making their exit. Still struggling to get up, I end up kneeling as I throw the item. It connects with Digger’s head, making him fall over. Maggie looks over and goes to grab him, but panics when she sees flashing red and blue lights against the window. She glances at Harkness and sighs.

“Sorry, Unc. I’ll bring ya a slab in the big house.”

I watch her run to the back door, and I manage to shake myself up to run after her. My hand slams into the door as I burst out into the alley. She’s nowhere to be seen. The only thing I could see is a boomerang with a rope wrapped around a fire escape. A few police officers, including a man with fiery red hair, walked out of the building and looked to me. I was shocked when I saw him. It was my uncle Daniel, who I never thought would be the police type.

“You alright, Flash?” he asks, seeing my shoulder and arm.

“Yeah, officer. I’m good.”

“Thanks for helping us take down Boomerang,” he mumbles as he flips a pair of handcuffs in his hand, “him and his niece, Maggie Harkness, have busted heists like this from Queensland to Fawcett. Luckily, he has higher ups interested in him. He’s joining his son, Owen Mercer, in Belle Reve.”

“It was a pleasure, officer. I’ll see you around.”

With that, I hurry back to S.T.A.R., not knowing just what I was about to get into.

Maggie Harkness makes her way into a derelict apartment, sliding the bag off of her shoulder and onto the ground. Her body goes limp as she crashes onto the lumpy mattress. This is big. She got her uncle in the slammer. Blimey, this is worse than the time they almost got busted in Coast City. It’s the bloody Flash’s fault, though. She’d put that girl down for good.

“Maggie…”

Maggie’s head flips up, looking around frantically. Someone’s in here.

“Where ya at, ya blasted demon?” she yelled as she brandished an exploding boomerang. Her eyes practically flip out of their sockets as she sees a large, black form with yellow and red lightning emitting from his body. Next to him was a man in an orange and green suit. The strangest thing was that they were standing inside the mirror. She looks around to try and see if it’s a trick, but no. They were inside it.

“‘Ooh the bloody ‘ell are you?” Maggie inquired, staring at the mass. It begins to speak, its scarlet eyes narrowed on her.

“I...am Zoom. This is my associate, the Mirror Master. I have a proposition for you. Help Mirror Master break into Iron Heights and free some prisoners that are of use to me. Help them kill the Flash and bring her head to me. Do this, and I will help you get your uncle out of his confinement.”

Maggie was taken aback. Kill the Flash? This is a dream come true. She hurried and grabbed all of her belongings and walked to the mirror. Here, she extended her hand and gasped as Zoom easily reached through it, grasped her wrist, and pulled her in. The glass was like liquid as she went through, coming out on what looked like a world made entirely of translucent panels. Mirrors as far as the eye could see. Zoom chuckled.

“Welcome to the Rogues, Boomerang.”
