Spur-winged Lapwing

These guys are undoubtedly one of my favorite shorebird species. They are among the most numerous of the various birds found at Sakumono Lagoon, along with the pratincole in my recent post. They nest along the shoreline, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to be tailed and badgered by an angry pair as I passed through. Unfortunately, they can be a bit skittish when they aren’t trying to take my head off, so it took about a half hour of slowly crawling through the wonderful mix of mud and various types of droppings found at the lagoon to get close enough... I thought it was completely worth it in the end, though.
