Labelle 2009 Concert Review

Atlantic City was freezing but seeing the crowd brave the ice and bad economy to see the reunion (30 years in the making) of Labelle was a sign that deep down people still have ears and know real singers when they hear them, and damn the elements! Not only was it a reunion it was a deeply felt breath of fresh air. The joy was out tonight with the people, for the people and justice for all. Patti, Sara, and Nona are Labelle. They were blistering right on the mark and took the audience on a tour and flashback to what music was and truly should be about-change, depth, harmony and fun.

Which is now and never dated or old. You can't fake soul. They were so moving I had to get out of my seat and watch them from other areas of the arena. It was that personal and collective all at once. For suddenly three forces of nature had been unleashed, voices soaring, meeting, pushing limits, electrifying, and caressing that was absolutly astounding to the ear hole and the heart that hopes for a brighter future. The outfits were funky but the voices were alive on a cosmic soul truth level that should make anyone that has not let these last bitter eight years eat them up, stand up and wave a scarf of joy and surrender to a heart that still holds love and a hope for a life that is graceful and kind. They were profoundly soulful and abundantly enthusiastic.

Labelle for almost two hours showed everyone the path back to loving one another. Hey sister soul, sister soul...

I gave them three bracelets that I had made for them, I handed them to Sara on the far right above. They each were silver and Amethyst on memory wire.

OH, sigh....simply put Labelle was pure outrageous funk insanity with a message and fabulous drag. Photo "Back to Now" by Kwaku Alston. Labelle reunion costumes by Slyvia Grieser.
