Wigan Sandite - ADB 977047/051
This is another of my iPhone copies from a box of original prints I found in my loft during Coronavirus Lockdown when I had even more time on my hands.
I’ve decided to start sharing my 40yrs of photos with the rest of Flickr.
I moved onto slide film in late 82 and one day I’ll start adding them
as and when I get a decent scanner.
In the meantime enjoy my digital images and other scanned prints & feel free to comment.
Wigan Springs Branch depot was a nice bike ride from where I lived in Warrington and on most visits the resident Sandite Unit was on the depot. On this occasion the pairing of ADB 977047 & ADB 977051 were in a perfect position to photograph.
The overhead electrification maintenance train can just be seen in the background.
047 is closest to the camera and is a Park Royal Class 103, 56156 which was first allocated on 03/05/58 to 3C (Ryecroft). It moved to Chester depot on 07/01/1967 and worked from there across the north west until February 1981 when it was transferred to Departmental use at Wigan Springs Branch emerging in December of that year as a Sandite Unit. It was finally withdrawn on 20/06/1986.
It’s seemingly permanently paired partner was a Cravens class 105 formerly numbered as 56427. It was brand new on 01/08/1958 initially allocated to Cambridge and had several allocations around that area until May 1977 when it was transferred to South Gosforth.
It was finally withdrawn from service from Heaton depot on 20/07/1981 and transferred to departmental stock at Wigan Springs Branch. It was transferred again on 01/01/1985 to Cricklewood where it was itself finally withdrawn circa Dec-86.
All the photos I’ve seen of these units appear to be taken driving cab end. For once I’m glad I took the photo from the more unusual gangway end.
Taken on 7th February 1982,
